Typically, patients interested in Invisalign are looking for a fast, convenient way to straighten their teeth. Invisalign can give you a straight smile in a year or less, in most cases, making it much faster than traditional orthodontic treatments.
At New Image Dental, our team wants every Invisalign patient to enjoy the benefits of efficient orthodontic treatment. Here are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of your Invisalign experience:
Wear Your Aligners For 22 Hours Per Day (Or More!)
22 hours per day should be your baseline For fast, optimal results, only remove your aligners for:
- Drinking (except water)
- Brushing and flossing
Unless you participate in a contact sport or a play musical instrument that requires you to remove your aligners, these are pretty the only reasons you should take them out. The more you wear your aligners, the more quickly your teeth will shift into proper position.
Always “Seat” Your Aligners Properly
If your aligners are not properly “seated” on your teeth, they won’t be as effective. Even if they’re only a bit loose or out of place for a few minutes per day, this can add up. After you snap your aligners in, bite on something soft and firm, such as your Invisalign “chewies”, to make sure that they’re completely locked in place. This may seem like a small step, but every little bit counts!
Keep Your Teeth (And Aligners) Clean
Plaque buildup is bad for your teeth, and it also may cause more friction between your teeth and aligners, causing them to move more slowly. For this reason, you should always make sure you’re brushing at least twice a day for two minutes, or, ideally, after every meal, and flossing once per day.
Cleaning your aligners regularly is also key to optimal results. Use a mild soap that washes away cleanly, and rinse and clean your aligners with warm water before you go to bed. Don’t use hot water, which could warp the aligners, or extremely cold water, which could make them brittle.
Always Swap Your Aligners According To Your Dentist’s Instructions
Dr. Leslie or Dr. Scott will provide you with a treatment schedule during your Invisalign process. Make sure that you always swap your aligners according to their instructions!
If you accidentally wear the wrong aligner, even for a few extra days, this can delay your treatment quite a bit.
