Invisalign: I’m too Old to Care About a “Perfect Smile”

You may think that having a ‘perfect smile’ is a young person’s concern. You’re too mature to care about frivolous things like looks. And hey, maybe that misaligned tooth or that gap gives you character.

With age comes the wisdom that appearances aren’t as important as they once seemed, but you should be old enough to know that a healthy smile is imperative to overall health and well being. It may interest you to know that a while a ‘perfect smile’ isn’t necessary to achieve ideal oral health, well aligned teeth are important to maintaining healthy gums and teeth.

Straight teeth, happy gums!

According to the folks at the American Dental Association, having straighter teeth can improve your overall dental health. Misaligned teeth can lead to an improper bite, meaning the teeth around the roof of the mouth don’t align properly with those of the jaw. Leaving an abnormal bite uncorrected can lead to a host of oral health issues.

A misaligned bite can cause uneven wear on the enamel of teeth, leading to bone loss, tooth decay and gum inflammation. Inflammation of the gums can cause gingivitis and other periodontal disease. While this is serious stuff, there’s no need to worry about a misaligned bite or a mouth full of metal. There’s a discreet and comfortable solution!

Never fear– Invisalign is here!

The Invisalign system works to correct a myriad of misalignment issues. From a few crowded teeth, to overbites, underbites and more complicated crossbites, Invisalign can correct simple misalignments to complex dental cases.

How does Invisalign work?

Once you and Dr. Strommer have determined that Invisalign will work to correct your smile, an impression of your teeth will be made and sent to Invisalign, where a custom set of aligner trays will be fabricated to fit your unique needs. The clear trays fit over your existing teeth and work to slowly shift teeth into proper position.

You will receive multiple sets of aligner trays, each one worn for approximately 2 weeks, afterwhich you will swap the old trays for new ones. Invisalign can be removed while you eat, drink, brush and floss, which helps you stick to your dental hygiene and oral care routine. And because the aligner trays are made of clear plastic, many people may not even realize you’re wearing them, making your treatment discreet and comfortable.

The duration of the entire process varies from case to case, so it’s best to make an appointment at New Image Dental to discuss your unique situation.

What happens when it’s all over?

After you finish the Invisalign treatment and your smile has been officially corrected, that’s it! Once your teeth are properly aligned, the gums will fit more securely around each tooth, ensuring optimal protection of the enamel and underlying bone. You can show off your new smile with confidence, and take comfort in the fact that your oral health is improved.

Remember, healthy teeth are happy teeth. Even if you’re not sure that your smile can be fixed with Invisalign, it’s worth it to see Dr. Strommer and discuss your options. Call (619) 280-9100 and set an appointment for an Invisalign consultation today!
