Implant supported dentures are a great alternative to standard dentures. Traditional dentures are supported only by friction between the gums and the denture. Implant-supported dentures, on the other hand, use 4-6 dental implants to permanently affix them to your jawbone.
Because they are permanently attached to your gums, implant supported dentures have a number of advantages. Since implants keep dentures from shifting around in the mouth while you eat or speak, they help prevent bone and gum tissue loss. They also require little maintenance, and usually last longer than traditional dentures.
Not sure if these dentures are right for you? Here are some common questions we hear from patients at New Image Dental about implant supported dentures:
1. Can I Take My Implant Supported Dentures Out?
No. Implant supported dentures either use a metal bar to retain the denture, or a ball-and-socket design. Neither of these designs allow you to remove your dentures. However, since there is no need to remove them in your day-to-day life, this should not be much of a concern.
2. How Do I Clean Implant Supported Dentures?
You must still follow good oral hygiene recommendations to prevent plaque and tartar buildup on your gums and dentures. Brush 2-3 times per day, floss once per day, and use mouthwash to ensure that your dentures are clean and in good condition.
3. Can I Get Implant Supported Dentures if I’ve Already Been Wearing Dentures?
In most cases, yes! If you have a healthy mouth, you may be able to get implant supported dentures even if you have been wearing traditional dentures for several years. However, this may not be true of all patients.
If you would like to know if you’re a good candidate for implant supported dentures, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our experienced implant dentists. Give us a call today to set up an appointment!
4. Is The Denture Placed Immediately After Surgery?
No. Your mouth needs some time to heal after the dental implants are placed. You will get a temporary set of dentures that fit over your implants, and these will be worn for about 3-6 months, or until the dental implants have healed and bonded with the surrounding gum and jaw tissue.
Once the implant is healed, our skilled dentists will place your dentures, and you’ll leave our office with a restored, confident smile.
5. What Are Dentures Made Of?
Most high-quality implant dentures are made of zirconia or porcelain, as these offer the longest lifespan and the best aesthetic appearance. However, acrylic bridges can also be used for implant dentures. Ask your doctor about their recommendations for denture material to ensure that you make the right choice for your specific needs.
